$ аpt-gеt install kernel-package libncurses5-dеv fakeroot wgеt bzіp2 buіld-essential
$ rm -rf lіnux

$ ln -s lіnux-x.x.xx lіnux

$ mаke ϲlean && mаke mrproper
$ ϲp /boot/config-`unаme -r` ./.config

Got to Loаd аn Alternative Configuration Fіle аnd loаd .config. Αfter configuring thе kernel, ѕave thе .config.
$ mаke-kpkg ϲlean
$ fakeroot mаke-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image kernel_headers
$ ϲd ..
$ lѕ -lt

eMusic is slowly getting better and better. They’ve quietly been upgrading their catalog. Their Blues selection is quickly approaching “amazing” and now, according to Digital Music News, they’ve picked up Rolling Stones’ 1964-1970 catalog. Searching eMusic’s site for rolling stones didn’t find anything, but searching for the ABKO label revealed several albums already available.

It’s too bad none of the big kahunas in the music industry had this attitude when Napster offered a monetization plan. Just image how far technology could’ve advanced in the past 7 years if the technology movers and shakers hadn’t been choking under the threat of multi-million dollar lawsuits.

netstat doesn’t behave as it does on Linux. Here’s how to show or list open ports on OS X:
$ sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i listen
I’ve set this up as an alias in my .profile (or .bashrc, depending on which shell you use) file as follows:
alias ports=’sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i listen’

cd to /usr/src and wget desired kernel from http://www.kernel.org.
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install kernel-package libncurses5-dev fakeroot wget bzip2 build-essential
$ rm -rf linux
$ tar xjf linux-x.x.xx.tar.bz2
$ ln -s linux-x.x.xx linux
$ cd /usr/src/linux
$ make clean && make mrproper
$ cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config
$ make menuconfig
Got to Load an Alternative Configuration File and load .config. After configuring the kernel, save the .config.
$ make-kpkg clean
$ fakeroot make-kpkg –initrd –append-to-version=-custom kernel_image kernel_headers
$ cd ..
$ ls -lt
You’ll see your two .deb files at the top. dpkg -i each package and reboot.

How to force a screen session to detach and then attach to that session:
# screen -ls
There are screens on:
32528.pts-0.computer (Attached)
5703.pts-2.computer (Detached)
2 Sockets in /var/run/screen/S-userid.
# screen -D -r 32528.pts-0.computer

It seems that just about every blog out there is reporting that the RIAA is now saying that ripping MP3s from CDs that you’ve purchased constitutes unauthorized use. They all point to this article on the Recording Industry vs. The People blog, which unequivocally states:
The RIAA’s brief makes the novel contention, contradicting its lawyers’ arguments at the Supreme Court in MGM v. Grokster, that making personal copies of songs from one’s CD onto one’s computer is an infringement.
Unfortunately, that’s misleading at best and deceitful at worst. If you actually read the RIAA’s Supplemental Brief, it quickly becomes apparent that the RIAA is arguing that ripping CDs and placing them into Kazaa’s shared folder constitutes infringement. This, of course, is a completely different animal.
But I guess it doesn’t lend itself to snappy headlines. And God forbid someone in the blogging world actually take the time to check a source before gulping down the Kool-Aid®.

Second, Rockies, don’t feel bad. You played the best you could, but you were simply out-classed. It happens.
Third, what a boring World Series that turned out to be. Dear God.

I finally received my copy of Leopard from Amazon yesterday and started rolling it out today. As of right now, I only have the wife’s iBook to go. I haven’t had a lot of time to play with it, so what follows is a brief overview.
On my MacBook Pro at work, I experienced the dreaded blue screen. Removing /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer.bundle took care of that problem. For some odd reason, all accounts other than root had been marked as non-administrative, so I had to login in as root to reset my userids correctly. Other than this, everything seems to be working fine.
On my MacBook Pro at home, everything worked fine except that I had to reboot (following the initial reboot) to get the wireless operational. The network looked fine, but it refused to query the DNS servers for name resolution. I could ping by IP address but not name. The reboot corrected the problem.
The Mac Pro (G5) installation was smooth, but I don’t believe the Mozy client has been updated yet. It’s giving me fits.
So, all in all, it was a smooth upgrade. I haven’t really kept up with all the new toys that Leopard provides, so I’m sure the next week or so will be equal parts education and frustration. Yay for learning. I am enjoying Spaces though. I just need to find a hot key combination that doesn’t interfere with TextMate.ßß

Dear God, if anything ever qualified as “an ass whooping,” tonight’s Game 1 is a hands-down contender. What the hell happened out there? It was like watching Boston play a local elementary school. At the time of this writing, the score is an embarrassing 13 to 1 and I’ve officially stopped paying attention.
Wow. Unless Colorado snaps to, this could be a very short World Series.
