Very clever, I like it. When I rip some of my movies for friends into divx, I used to always just include MPC, ffmpeg, & ac3filter on the disc with instructions telling them to run them. I also put VLC on as a last resort.
Anyway, I’ve given this a run - seems to work as advertised. Just out of curiousity, I tried to run the exe’s in WINE - they ran just fine. This is a nice tool for fixed media (e.g. giving out videos on discs) but obviously a really bad storage method.

This is a terrible idea. That you are advertising it is worse. It’s already difficult enough to deal with codec compatibility in different players, now you are encouraging distribution for Windows only.

Hrm, I wouldn’t say a terrible idea. Take it or leave it!
I am *not* shoving this down anyone’s throat, simply a tool to add to the bag!

[…] Windows only: Free application MakeInstantPlayer converts any video file into an EXE file complete with the player and codecs needed to play it. If you’ve ever shared a video with a non-tech-savvy friend just to get reports back that they couldn’t get it to play, this application offers a simple solution: Just run your video through MakeInstantPlayer and send the resulting EXE instead (which in my test is about 5 MB bigger than the original). Your friend can simply run the EXE—which bundles the MPlayer media player and everything else they need to play back the file—and start watching. It may not be an application you’ll use every day, but under the right circumstances, this clever app might be just what you need. MakeInstantPlayer [via Hackosis] […]
